Hey guys, I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to properly replace the handle on my tomahawk? any strange things that should be done? Is it safe to just use pure friction or is something else needed?

Thanks, WH.

Theyre both cold steel models, with that pesky lil allen screw thing. Will i need a new screw? or will they hold on themselves?

Have you actually tried unscrewing the screw? It doesn't actually go into the wood. It's there to just add more security.

If it were me, I'd just buy the new handle and give it a run.

You were smarter though. It's around $20 for a new handle? Not a lot, but no need to throw it down the drain.

Cut a saw kerf, maybe two, in the business end of the handle.

Fit the handle securely to the eye of the hawk head. Probably tighten that set screw at this time.

Drive a wooden wedge or wedges into the saw kerf or kerfs.

If they are metal wedges or those round ones, you probably don't need to cut saw kerfs. Just bang them in.

If they're wooden wedges, they'll probably be left proud of the handle end. Cut them flush.

A Tomahawk is a tapered slip fit. No wedge involved. You can get replacements from Cold Steel pretty cheap. The shape of the eye in the CS hawks aren't very consistant so you might need to do some hand fitting. Just tap it on with a mallet and go. Stories of heating head slightly and freezing handle but don't think it is necesary. The screw doesn't really do much on the TrailHawk.
